  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
For Coating
  • 0.5 cups powdered sugar For coating the cookies

Preparation
  1. Assemble all your ingredients and ensure the butter is softened for easy creaming.
  2. Sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Cream the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Then mix in the vanilla extract and red food coloring until the batter is vibrant.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients on low speed until just combined; the dough should be soft.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll small amounts of dough into 1-inch balls.
  2. Roll each ball in granulated sugar, then coat in powdered sugar.
  3. Place the sugar-coated balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced an inch apart.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes until puffed and crackled on top.
  5. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Serve warm with cold milk or hot cocoa. Drizzle with cream cheese frosting for extra sweetness. Store in an airtight container for 4-5 days at room temperature, or freeze for up to 3 months.
