Preparation
- Assemble all your ingredients and ensure the butter is softened for easy creaming.
- Sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Cream the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Then mix in the vanilla extract and red food coloring until the batter is vibrant.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients on low speed until just combined; the dough should be soft.
Baking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll small amounts of dough into 1-inch balls.
- Roll each ball in granulated sugar, then coat in powdered sugar.
- Place the sugar-coated balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced an inch apart.
- Bake for 10 minutes until puffed and crackled on top.
- Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Serve warm with cold milk or hot cocoa. Drizzle with cream cheese frosting for extra sweetness. Store in an airtight container for 4-5 days at room temperature, or freeze for up to 3 months.
