  • 3 pieces ripe bananas The riper, the better for added sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce Can be substituted with yogurt for creaminess.
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup Adjust sweetness based on banana ripeness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Can use gluten-free flour blend as a substitute.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts or chocolate chips (optional) Add for extra crunch or sweetness.

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mash the bananas until smooth.
  3. Stir in applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. In another bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. If desired, fold in nuts or chocolate chips for an extra crunch or sweetness.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

Serve fresh from the oven or with almond butter or cream cheese. Store wrapped in plastic for up to 5 days in the fridge, or freeze for up to 3 months.
